There’s no pigeonholing novelist Stewart O’Nan or his books. They are, The New York Times said, “as remarkable for their precise, economical language and depth of characterization as for the fact that each is as different from its predecessor, in style, tone and narrative approach, as if it had come from a different author.”

O’Nan’s work spans from Snow Angels and Last Night at the Lobster to a nonfiction collaboration with Stephen King, Faithful: Two Diehard Boston Red Sox Fans Chronicle the Historic 2004 Season. In conjunction with his four-day stay as the Cockefair Writer in Residence at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he discusses his craft and career in a conversation with Angela Elam of KCUR-FM’s New Letters on the Air.

Co-presented by the Writers at Work Round Table, the Carolyn Benton Cockefair Chair at UMKC, and the UMKC English Department.

6/8/17 6:30PM: Meet the Author – Squirrel Hill Library

Join us on June 8 at 6:30 pm for Meet the Author with Stewart O’Nan. Stewart O’Nan’s award-winning fiction includes Snow Angels, A Prayer for the Dying, Last Night at the Lobster, and Emily, Alone. He lives in Pittsburgh.

Stewart O’Nan’s most recent publication, City of Secrets, is a timely moral thriller of the Jewish underground resistance in Jerusalem after the Second World War. In 1945, with no homes to return to, Jewish refugees by the tens of thousands set out for Palestine. Those who made it were hunted as illegals by the British mandatory authorities there and relied on the underground to shelter them; taking fake names, they blended with the population, joining the wildly different factions fighting for the independence of Israel. City of Secrets follows one survivor, Brand, as he tries to regain himself after losing everyone he’s ever loved. A noirish, deeply felt novel of intrigue and identity written in O’Nan’s trademark lucent style, City of Secrets asks how both despair and faith can lead us astray, and what happens when, with the noblest intentions, we join movements beyond our control.

10/15/16: Culver City Centennial Read – One Book, One City

westofsunset_drafta_zpsnoguqtiv

After spending several months investigating books that are relevant to Culver City itself, we chose West of Sunset by best-selling author Stewart O’Nan for our Citywide Centennial Read. This is the fictionalized story of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s life while he was trying to make ends meet as a screenwriter at MGM studios, now the Sony Pictures Entertainment lot on Overland. Filled with references to the Golden Age of Hollywood, local color and the actors, movies and players of the time, this is a perfect complement to our celebration of Culver City’s Centennial.

We are planning several activities to enhance your enjoyment of the book. Among other activities, we will have a readers’ discussion at the library and one at the senior center, a historical tour of the Sony lot, and a talk by Stewart O’Nan himself at the library on Saturday morning, October 15 at 10:30 a.m. In addition, the author will be speaking to students at Culver City High School on October 14 during lunch, and to a couple of classes during the day.
